The IIT Madras BS Degree in Data Science and Applications has a modular, pay-as-you-go fee structure. 1. Foundation Level

  • Credits: 32

2. Diploma Level

  • Diploma in Programming & Diploma in Data Science
    • Theory Course Fee: ₹2,500 per credit
    • Project Course Fee: ₹1,250 per credit
    • Total for Both Diplomas: ₹1,25,000

3. BSc Degree Level

  • Level 3 Courses: ₹2,500 per credit
  • Level 4 Courses: ₹5,000 per credit
  • NPTEL Electives: ₹1,000 per credit (for credit transfer)
  • Typical Range: ₹2.21–2.47 lakh

4. BS Degree Level

  • Level 3 Courses: ₹2,500 per credit
  • Level 4 Courses: ₹5,000 per credit

Other Fees and Charges

  • Qualifier Exam Fee: ₹3,000 (non-refundable; waivers available for SC/ST/PwD categories)
  • Re-attempt Fee for Qualifier Exam: ₹1,500 (General/OBC), ₹750 (SC/ST/PwD), ₹375 (SC/ST & PwD)
  • Project Course Registration: ₹2,500 per project (with some waivers)
  • Makeup Exam Fee: ₹1,000 per Foundation course, ₹2,000 per Diploma/Degree course
  • Repeat for Improvement: Double the normal course fee
  • Registration Keep Alive Fee (RKA): ₹1,000 per term (if not registering for any courses in a term)
  • Readmission Fee: ₹2,500 (if struck off the rolls and seeking reactivation)
  • Dropping a Course: Deduction of ₹2,000 (Foundation) or ₹4,000 (Diploma/Degree) per dropped course from refund
  • Credit Transfer from NPTEL: ₹1,000 per credit
  • Credit Transfer from IITM Campus Courses: ₹2,500 per credit (plus institute fees)
  • Apprenticeship Credit Transfer: ₹5,000 per credit

Fee Waivers

Fee waivers are available based on category and family income:

  • General/OBC: Full fee unless family income < ₹5 lakh (50% waiver)
  • EWS/OBC-NCL: 50% waiver (income < ₹5 lakh), 75% waiver (income < ₹1 lakh)
  • SC/ST/PwD: 50% waiver (all), 75% waiver (income < ₹1 lakh)

  • Additional Exam Facilitation Fee:
    • Quiz 1: ₹2,000
    • Quiz 2: ₹2,000
    • End-term: ₹2,000 (one course) or ₹4,000 (multiple courses)

How Fees Are Paid

  • Per Course, Per Term: Students register and pay only for the courses they choose each term.
  • No Lump Sum: There is no upfront lump-sum payment for the entire program.
  • Flexible Exit: Students can exit after any level (Foundation, Diploma, BSc, BS) and pay only for completed courses.
